This follows the story of Georgie Jutland (Kelly Macdonald), a former nurse trapped in the backwater fishing port of White Point with local crayfish baron, Jim Buckridge (David Wenham) and his two sons, whose dead mother she can never hope to replace. One night she sees Lu Fox (Garret Hedlund) appear in the mists of the bay. Lu was a dirt musician, but now he survives as a poacher. Georgie is instantly drawn to Lu, and the pair begin an intense affair. What Georgie doesn’t know is that the Foxes and the Buckridges have a long, murky history.
Fearing Jim’s fury and haunted by his past, Lu flees north to Coronation Island, a place dear to Georgie’s heart. Discovering Lu has fled, Georgie follows him north with the unlikely help of Jim.
This tale of love and redemption set against awe-inspiring backdrop of the Australian West is based on the critically acclaimed novel by iconic Australian writer Tim Winton.
Dirt Music is a directed by Australian filmmaker Gregor Jordan (Two Hands, Ned Kelly, The Informers). The screenplay is written by Jack Thorne, adapted from Tim Winton’s novel of the same name.

Dirt Music premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2019. It also played at the Glasgow Film Festival in February 2020. Dirt Music will be released in the United States in July, 2020 although no definite date has been set.
It was announced in August 2018 that Garrett Hedlund and Kelly Macdonald were cast to star in the adaptation of Tim Winton’s novel. In October, the supporting cast, including David Wenham, was added. Dirt Music was filmed in Kimberley, Western Australia, Perth and Esperance.
