This movie follows 25-year-old former radical Jenny Shimada (Hong Chau). Adept at living off the grid ever since she masterminded an act of violence against the American government, she agrees to take care of three fugitives who are on the run. One of them, the kidnapped granddaughter (Sarah Gadon) of a wealthy newspaper magnate , has become a national celebrity for embracing her captors’ ideology and joining their revolutionary cell.
American Woman is an American-Canadian drama film written and directed by writer and executive producer Semi Chellas (Mad Men, The Romanoffs), in her directorial debut. This film is inspired by the headline-dominating kidnapping of heiress Patty Hearst in 1974. It is a fictionalized re-imagining of her time in hiding, from the perspective of a political activist assigned to take care of her. It is based on the 2003 novel of the same title by Susan Choi.
It stars Hong Chau, Sarah Gadon, John Gallagher Jr., Lola Kirke, David Cubitt, Jordan Pettle, Richard Walters, and Ellen Burstyn.

American Woman is scheduled to be released in Canada direct to VOD on June 30, 2020, by Elevation Pictures.
