Jonny West (age 23) from Murietta, California performed “You Can’t Keep a Good Man Down” by James and Bobby Purify during the Finale of American Idol 2020 (Season 18).
Lionel Richie commented, “What I love about you is you can take any song, any style, and make it your song. And I just don’t know how you’re so calm all the time. I want to find out what vitamin you’re on because man, you’re just chilled.”
Luke Bryan said Johnny navigates the songs like a seasoned 40-year performer. He said Johnny’s talent “it’s given from the man upstairs”.
Katy Perry said Jonny is so cool and it’s so easy for him. She thinks that in the future she will see Jonny in the industry, like she’s going to see him backstage and ask him “What’s up Jonny?”
Jonny West competed in the Finale against the other Top 5 contenders, namely Just Sam, Arthur Gunn, Francisco Martin and Dillon James. Just Sam was voted as the winner of American Idol, followed by runner-up Arthur Gunn.
American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television and airs Sundays at 8/7c. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, filming of American Idol was temporarily suspended and contestants were sent home. Production resumed in late April, with all of the contestants performing from their homes. The Grand Finale was aired on May 17, 2020.
Ryan Seacrest continues his role as the show’s host and Bobby Bones returns as the in-house mentor. Despite budget cuts, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie come back as judges for their third season of the series.
