Louis Knight (age 19) from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania sang “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from The Lion King during the Top 7 Disney Night/Mother’s Day performances on American Idol 2020 (Season 18).
Katy Perry said Niall Horan better watch out because Louis Knight is coming in real quick. She said she got lost in the performance thinking about Louis’ future in 10 years and how wild it’s going to be for him to look back to this moment, when he becomes such a massive star. Katy said Louis did a good job but advised him to lean in vocally to his next performance.
Luke Bryan said he loves the tenderness in the performance, saying it was done well. But he said it got a little linear after three quarters of the song. Luke said it was a great job and said Louis has a great future.
Lionel Richie said that normally one has a crowd in front and one gets to feed off of that crowd. He said it’s difficult to stay on the mark when one is in the backyard with just the neighbors around. “A lot of times I saw you kind of drift out just a little bit. It’s just a matter of focus. But I’m telling you, you’ve got the stroke,” he said. He advised Louis to just lean forward and enjoy the ride.

“Can You Feel the Love Tonight” is a song from Disney’s 1994 animated film The Lion King composed by Elton John with lyrics by Tim Rice. It peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold 11 million copies worldwide. At the 67th Academy Awards in March 1995, it won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and also won Elton John the Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in the same year.
American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television and airs Sundays at 8/7c. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, filming of American Idol was temporarily suspended and contestants were sent home. Production resumed in late April, with all of the contestants performing from their homes.
Ryan Seacrest continues his role as the show’s host and Bobby Bones returns as the in-house mentor. Despite budget cuts, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie come back as judges for their third season of the series.
