Louis Knight (age 19) from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania performs a Coldplay hit during the Top 10 Homeward Bound round on American Idol 2020 (Season 18). The “Top 10” was modified to a Top Eleven as the judges added another singer when they used their “Save” for Makayla Phillips.
American Idol judge Katy Perry said it was commendable that Louis leaned into his roots. She said whatever happens, Louis is a star, “obviously”. Katy thinks it was a good song choice that pulled at her heartstrings and made her escape to a better time.
Luke Bryan said he wasn’t completely blown away but said the core of all this is that Louis has a wonderful star quality. He advised Louis to keep singing songs that speak to him.
Lionel Richie said Louis did a great job. “Play that camera as much as you can, that’s gonna be the ticket that’s gonna get you over the top,” he advised.

“In My Place” was released in August 2002 as the lead single from Coldplay’s second album A Rush of Blood to the Head. The song peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart and also reached number 17 on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks. “In My Place” won the award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal at the 45th Annual Grammy Awards.
American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television and airs Sundays at 8/7c. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, filming of American Idol was temporarily suspended and contestants were sent home. Production resumed in late April, with all of the contestants performing from their homes.
Ryan Seacrest continues his role as the show’s host and Bobby Bones returns as the in-house mentor. Despite budget cuts, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie come back as judges for their third season of the series.
