Just Sam (age 21) from Harlem, New York performed “A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes” from the animated feature Cinderella during the Top 7 Disney Night/Mother’s Day performances on American Idol 2020 (Season 18).
American Idol judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie were impressed by her rendition.
Luke Bryan said Just Sam is so deserving to be in the Top 7. He commented, “The amazing thing about your voice is how it just holds up at every level of your range.”
Lionel Richie said Just Sam is American Idol’s “kid”. When Just Sam walked into American Idol, Lionel said she wasn’t quite sure of anything. “We watched you grow up right in front of us. And now you have America and the world voting for you. Not Just Sam, but Sam. You are a star, my dear.”
Katy Perry said she liked it when Just Sam gave it a “little bit of gas” towards the end. But Katy wanted a little more. She said so many people have already fallen in love with Just Sam and whatever happens, she’s already a star. Katy cited Jennifer Hudson who came in 7th, but got an Oscar later.

“A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes” was written and composed by Mack David, Al Hoffman and Jerry Livingston for the Walt Disney film Cinderella (1950). It was sung by Ilene Woods (who voiced Cinderella in the movie) and was also performed by Lily James for the soundtrack of the live-action version of Cinderella in 2015.
American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television and airs Sundays at 8/7c. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, filming of American Idol was temporarily suspended and contestants were sent home. Production resumed in late April, with all of the contestants performing from their homes.
Ryan Seacrest continues his role as the show’s host and Bobby Bones returns as the in-house mentor. Despite budget cuts, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie come back as judges for their third season of the series.
