Julia Gargano (age 21) from Staten Island, New York sang “Beauty and the Beast” from the movie of the same name during the Top 7 Disney Night/Mother’s Day performances on American Idol 2020 (Season 18).
Luke Bryan said he loves it when Julia lives in that “little area of cry” in her voice. Luke thinks the song was a little bit low, but Julia still owned those moments and it was still a great job on the performance.
Lionel Richie said that if Julia is going low, she has to concentrate a little bit more on her lower register. He said the performance was amazing but the lows of the song did not complement her as well. But once she got to her mids and highs, she’s off to the races.
Katy Perry said she calls her Julia Gargorgeous because her voice and looks are gorgeous. She said Julia’s star quality is at 10. Katy said she loved the arrangement and thought it was super soulful and agrees with the other judges as to where voice is best set. But she thinks Julia is a star no matter what happens and hopes she goes to Number 1.
Julia thanked the judges for giving her all the advice and feedback because it has made her a completely different artist.

“Beauty and the Beast” is a song written by lyricist Howard Ashman and composer Alan Menken for the Disney film Beauty and the Beast (1991). It was first recorded by British-American actress Angela Lansbury in her role as the voice of the character Mrs. Potts. The song was subsequently recorded as a pop duet by Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson, and released as the only single from the film’s soundtrack in November 1991. The song garnered both a Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Original Song, as well as Grammy Awards for Best Song Written for Visual Media and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. The single peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2004, the American Film Institute officially recognized “Beauty and the Beast” as one of the greatest songs in film history, ranking it 62nd.
American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television and airs Sundays at 8/7c. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, filming of American Idol was temporarily suspended and contestants were sent home. Production resumed in late April, with all of the contestants performing from their homes.
Ryan Seacrest continues his role as the show’s host and Bobby Bones returns as the in-house mentor. Despite budget cuts, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie come back as judges for their third season of the series.
