Country vocalist Grace Leer (age 27) from Nashville, Tennessee performed Judy Garland‘s “Over The Rainbow” during the Top 10 Homeward Bound round on American Idol 2020 (Season 18). The “Top 10” was modified to a Top Eleven as the judges added another singer when they used their “Save” for Makayla Phillips.
Katy Perry said she never heard Grace Leer’s voice “like that at all”. She said Grace went big and it was bold all throughout. “It was like you were singing to thousands.” Grace said that was what she was trying to imagine.
Luke Bryan said Grace has that sweet spot of a country voice that they know and love. But Grace showed America that she has a big voice. Overall, Luke said he loved the performance and seeing a different side. He said he’s excited as to what Grace can do and where she’ll wind up.
Lionel Richie took a different view. He said, “Remember the audience that you’re singing to. If country is your aim, is your goal, is your thing, stay right there. Just hone in on where we’re trying to go. Kill it.”

Grace Leer Sings Beautiful Rendition of “Over The Rainbow”
“Over the Rainbow” is a ballad composed by Harold Arlen with lyrics by Yip Harburg, written for the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. It was sung by actress Judy Garland in her starring role as Dorothy Gale, when she was 16 years old. The song won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and became Garland’s signature song. In March 2017, “Over the Rainbow” by Judy was entered in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as music that is “culturally, historically, or artistically significant”. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) ranked it number one on their Songs of the Century list. The American Film Institute named it best movie song on the AFI’s 100 Years…100 Songs list.
American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television and airs Sundays at 8/7c. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, filming of American Idol was temporarily suspended and contestants were sent home. Production resumed in late April, with all of the contestants performing from their homes.
Ryan Seacrest continues his role as the show’s host and Bobby Bones returns as the in-house mentor. Despite budget cuts, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie come back as judges for their third season of the series.
