Dillon James (age 26) from Bakersfield, California puts his spin on The Beatles classic “Yesterday” during the Top 10 Homeward Bound round on American Idol 2020 (Season 18). The “Top 10” was modified to a Top Eleven as the judges added another singer when they used their “Save” for Makayla Phillips.
American Idol judges gave mixed reactions to Dillon’s performance but all acknowledged his artistry.
Lionel Richie said that Dillon James has an absolute sound to his voice. “It’s identifiable to you and you only. Keep that in focus, be yourself,” he said.
Katy Perry wanted Dillon to give a bit of breath to it because it felt like metronome, within certain parameters. She said Dillon is such an artist that needs to paint beyond the lines with his voice.
Luke Bryan said he quite agree with Katy but what’s important is that he does not want what he says to affect Dillon’s great artistry. He said if Dillon performs the same song somewhere, he should slow it down a bit and relax it and “let those lyrics be able to take shape and form.”

Dillon James Is Smooth Singing “Yesterday” by The Beatles
“Yesterday” was first released on The Beatles’ album Help! in August 1965, except in the United States, where it was issued as a single in September. The song reached number one on the US charts and remains popular today. It is one of the most covered songs in the history of recorded music with more than 2,200 cover versions and according to Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI), it was performed over seven million times in the 20th century. In 1997, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television and airs Sundays at 8/7c. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, filming of American Idol was temporarily suspended and contestants were sent home. Production resumed in late April, with all of the contestants performing from their homes.
Ryan Seacrest continues his role as the show’s host and Bobby Bones returns as the in-house mentor. Despite budget cuts, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie come back as judges for their third season of the series.
