Dillon James (age 26) from Bakersfield, California sang “Our Town” from the animated feature Cars during the Top 7 Disney Night/Mother’s Day performances on American Idol 2020 (Season 18).
Katy Perry said Dillon took everything they said last week and applied it magnificently. Katy was engaged in the performance and said Dillon was “making love” to the camera. She thinks it was so sincere and so beautiful.
Luke Bryan said there were dynamics and emotions in Dillon’s performance, it just felt great from top to bottom.
Lionel Richie said Dillon is a storyteller. “I wasn’t thinking about the notes. I was watching you tell us a story. You are a true artist,” he said.

“Our Town” is a song used in the 2006 Disney·Pixar animated film Cars. It was written by Randy Newman and recorded by James Taylor. The song won the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media at the 49th Grammy Awards (2007) and also won for Music in an Animated Feature Production at the 34th Annie Awards. It was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television and airs Sundays at 8/7c. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, filming of American Idol was temporarily suspended and contestants were sent home. Production resumed in late April, with all of the contestants performing from their homes.
Ryan Seacrest continues his role as the show’s host and Bobby Bones returns as the in-house mentor. Despite budget cuts, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie come back as judges for their third season of the series.
