Arthur Gunn (age 21) from Wichita, Kansas makes a John Denver classic his own during the Top 10 Homeward Bound round on American Idol 2020 (Season 18). Note that the Top 10 was modified to a Top Eleven as the judges used their save for an additional singer.
American Idol judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie were stunned by his performance.
Katy Perry said she felt much more connected to the performance with Arthur looking at the camera and working it. She said it was amazing. Luke Bryan said so much of Arthur’s vibe is Bob Marley and taking John Denver’s song and making it that reggae style really showcased Arthur in a perfect way. Lionel Richie observed the same thing and said, “When you make John Denver’s song with a reggae twist on it and it’s all believable, it’s all the way to a hit record for you…I loved what you did.”

“Take Me Home, Country Roads“, also known simply as “Take Me Home” or “Country Roads”, was released as a single performed by John Denver on April 12, 1971, peaking at number two on Billboard’s US Hot 100 singles for the week ending August 28, 1971. The song was certified Platinum by the RIAA on April 10, 2017. It is one of John Denver’s most popular songs and continues to sell, with over 1.6 million digital copies sold in the United States. In March 2014, it became one of the four official state anthems of West Virginia.
American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television and airs Sundays at 8/7c. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, filming of American Idol was temporarily suspended and contestants were sent home. Production resumed in late April, with all of the contestants performing from their homes.
