Arthur Gunn (age 21) from Wichita, Kansas, performs The Little Mermaid classic “Kiss The Girl” during the Top 7 Disney Night/Mother’s Day performances on American Idol 2020 (Season 18).
American Idol judges Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, and Katy Perry were impressed by his performance.
Katy Perry said Arthur looked relaxed and cool and she thinks overall, he engaged with the judges and the audience.
Luke Bryan said it’s fun watching Arthur transition from a very soft spoken, quiet guy to a “truly potentially massive recording artist.” He said he cannot wait for Arthur to make a record.
Lionel Richie said that anything Arthur sings will have an “Arthur Gunn stamp” on it. He said the most important thing to sell right now is “your style, your identity” and Arthur is doing a great job at selling it.

“Kiss the Girl” is a song written by composer Alan Menken and lyricist Howard Ashman for Walt Disney Pictures’ 28th animated feature film The Little Mermaid (1989). It was originally recorded by American actor Samuel Wright in his film role as Sebastian. The song was nominated for both an Academy and Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song, but lost both to “Under the Sea”, another song from The Little Mermaid movie.
American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television and airs Sundays at 8/7c. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, filming of American Idol was temporarily suspended and contestants were sent home. Production resumed in late April, with all of the contestants performing from their homes.
Ryan Seacrest continues his role as the show’s host and Bobby Bones returns as the in-house mentor. Despite budget cuts, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie come back as judges for their third season of the series.
