This movie follows the story of a shy, straight-A student named Ellie Chiu (Leah Lewis) who feels isolated and friendless in her remote town of Squahamish, where she makes much-needed extra cash penning homework papers for her fellow high school students. Ellie reluctantly agrees to help inarticulate school jock Paul Munsky (Daniel Diemer) write love letters to Aster Flores (Alexxis Lemire). Ellie and Paul’s unlikely friendship gets complicated when Ellie discovers she has feelings for the same girl.
As all three embark on an unexpected journey of discovery, they form an intricate triangle of friendship as they come to terms with their own unexpected feelings about love.

In April 2019, it was announced that Leah Lewis, Alexxis Lemire, Daniel Diemer, Becky Ann Baker, Catherine Curtin, Wolfgang Novogratz and Enrique Murciano had joined the cast of The Half of It, with Alice Wu directing from a screenplay she wrote. Wu and Anthony Bregman will serve as producers on the film, with Netflix distributing. In June 2019, it was announced that Collin Chou joined the cast.
Principal photography for the film was done in New York from April 22 to May 31, 2019.
The Half of It was scheduled to have its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 18, 2020. But the festival was postponed due to the 2019-20 coronavirus pandemic. It is scheduled to be released on May 1, 2020 on Netflix.
