The Etruscan Smile follows the story of a rugged old Scotsman named Rory (Brian Cox) who reluctantly leaves his beloved isolated Hebridean island and travels to San Francisco to seek medical treatment. Moving in with his estranged son, Rory’s life will be transformed, through a newly found love for his baby grandson. He must also deal with culture shock, his bitter relationship with his son Ian (JJ Feild), his long-standing feud with another crusty old Scotsman, and falling in love with a beautiful free-spirited woman (Rosanna Arquette).
This movie is co-directed by Oded Binnun and Mihal Brezis, both making their feature directorial debut. The screenplay is written by Michael McGowan, Michal Lali Kagan, and Sarah Bellwood, based on the novel by José Luis Sampedro. This dramatic film is produced by 6-time Oscar Winning Producer Arthur Cohn.

The Etruscan Smile bagged several awards from different film festivals including Best Ensemble Cast and Best Cinematography at the 2018 Boston Film Festival; Best Film at the 2018 the Montreal World Film Festival; Best Narrative Feature, Audience Award at the 2018 Naples International Film Festival; Best Feature at the 2018 Rhode Island International Film Festival; Best Film at the 2018 Stony Brook Film Festival; and Best US Nonfiction Film, Audience Award at the 2019 Traverse City Film Festival.
Scottish actor Brian Cox CBE (age 73) portrays the lead role of Rory in the movie. Cox works with the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he gained recognition for his portrayal of King Lear. He currently stars as media magnate Logan Roy on HBO’s Succession. His film credits include Super Troopers, The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, X2, Braveheart, Rushmore, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Troy. He was the first actor to portray Hannibal Lecter on film in 1986’s Manhunter.
Aside from being an Emmy Award and Golden Globe winner, Cox has also been nominated for the BAFTA, and Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG).
