The movie follows Kyle (Kyle Marvin) and Mike (Michael Angelo Covino), best friends who share a close bond – until Mike sleeps with Kyle’s fiancée. The Climb is about a tumultuous but enduring relationship between two men across many years of laughter, heartbreak and rage. It is also the story of real-life best friends who turn their deep connection into a rich, humane and frequently funny film about the boundaries (or lack thereof) in all close friendships.

The Climb had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section on May 17, 2019. The film also went onto screen at the Telluride Film Festival on August 30, 2019, The Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, 2019, and the Sundance Film Festival on January 24, 2020.
Sony Pictures Classics acquired distribution rights to the film and originally scheduled it for release on March 20, 2020. The distributor earlier stated they would go ahead with the release despite the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it was later rescheduled to July 17, 2020.
On review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, The Climb has a 91% approval rating based on 33 reviews. Metacritic reports a score of 82 out of 100 based on 9 critic reviews, indicating “universal acclaim”.
