Riverdale is an American teen drama TV series based on the characters of Archie Comics. The series was adapted for The CW by Archie Comics’ chief creative officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, and is produced by Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios, in association with Berlanti Productions and Archie Comics. Originally conceived as a feature film adaptation for Warner Bros. Pictures, the idea was re-imagined as a TV series for Fox. In 2015, development on the project moved to The CW, where the series was ordered for a pilot. Filming took place in Vancouver, British Columbia.
The series debuted on January 26, 2017, to positive reviews. In January 2019, The CW renewed Riverdale for a fourth season consisting of 22 episodes. The fourth season premiered on October 9, 2019. Filming for the fourth season began in, July 2019 and was originally expected to end on April 4, 2020. But production was suspended on March 11, 2020 as a direct result of the coronavirus pandemic, and the season ended at Episode 19. Series writer Ted Sullivan confirmed in a tweet that the remaining three episodes will be aired as part of season five.
New Zealand actor KJ Apa (age 22) zoomed to fame when he took on the role of Archie Andrews on Riverdale in 2017. Prior to Riverdale, Apa also starred as Kane Jenkins in the primetime soap opera Shortland Street and as teenage Ethan Montgomery in the comedy-drama film A Dog’s Purpose.
Lili Reinhart (age 23) is an American actress, who also became known for portraying Betty Cooper on Riverdale. Reinhart was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and raised in the nearby town of Bay Village. She developed a love for singing, acting, and dancing at the age of 10, and begged her mom to drive her to New York for auditions. Reinhart moved to Los Angeles when she was 18 years old to pursue acting and almost gave up after five months.
On review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, Riverdale Season 1 has a certified fresh rating of 88% based on 62 ratings, with an audience score of 80%. Season 4 holds an approval rating of 84% from 63 critics while the audience score is at a low 51% based on 207 user ratings.
