Nick Merico (age 24) from Woodland Hills, California, turns his apartment into a stage and performed “Hey There Delilah” by Plain White T’s during the “Top 20 Sing For America” round on American Idol 2020 (Season 18).
“Hey There Delilah” is the third single from Plain White T’s third studio album All That We Needed. It was released in May 2006 and reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in July 2007.
American Idol judges were impressed with Nick’s heartfelt performance, with Katy Perry exclaiming, “Wow! Amazing!” Lionel Richie said, “I love this performance very much.” Luke Bryan commented it’s a good job but he would have loved it if Nick “just dig in a little more”. He thinks it’s a big step just stripping it down to just Nick and his piano. Katy Perry said she heard the subtleties of Nick’s voice and how beautiful it is, probably because of the more intimate setting. She thinks it is one of Nick’s better performances.
