A never before seen performance of Franklin Boone covering “I Don’t Trust Myself (With Loving You)” by John Mayer during Hollywood Week on American Idol 2020 (Season 18) has recently been posted online.
“I Don’t Trust Myself (With Loving You)” is a track from John Mayer’s third studio album Continuum released in 2006.
Franklin Boone (age 27), a music teacher at the School of Rock in Durham, North Carolina wowed the American Idol judges with his performance. Katy Perry gave him a standing ovation and said “He’s so good.” Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan agreed. Lionel said he loves Franklin while Luke said, “This is his world, right here.”
Franklin made it through the next round and went to Hawaii for the Top 40 showcase and final judgment. He also breezed through that round and made it to the Top 20 of American Idol 2020.
Before his performance, Franklin and the rest of the contestants had a chance to meet Season 17’s finalist, Alejandro Aranda. Franklin told Alejandro that he feels the unspoken pressure to change his personality a little bit. “I just think back to you and you just were yourself the whole season and it still carried you to the top. And so I just wanted to thank you,” he said.
Alejandro replied, “I tried to show that the best I can…Never change. You’re you for a reason.”
American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television and will air Sundays at 8/7c until the live shows. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, filming of American Idol is temporarily suspended and the production will assess things on a weekly basis.
Ryan Seacrest continues his role as the show’s host and Bobby Bones returns as the in-house mentor. Despite budget cuts, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie come back as judges for their third season of the series.
