Mike Jerel (age 31) from Ashburn, Georgia sang a cover of “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” by James Brown during the Blind Auditions round of The Voice 2020 (Season 18).
“It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” is a song written by James Brown and Betty Jean Newsome. Brown released it as a single in 1966. It reached No. 1 on the Billboard R&B chart and No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The Voice judges/coaches John Legend and Nick Jonas turned their chairs for Mike after he sang the first line of the song. Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton, pressed their buttons later on, giving Mike Jerel a 4-chair-turn.
Replying to John Legend’s question, Mike said he played in nursing homes and at church. John said that Mike played and sang with such a level of confidence, and knew where he wanted to go with his performance.
The coaches fought over Mike Jerel with their pitches to get him on their team. On the next episode of The Voice 2020, his choice was revealed. Mike picked John Legend as his coach.
Episode: 4 (March 9, 2020)
Coach: John Legend
Song: “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” by James Brown
John Legend said that Mike’s voice had so much fire. He also said that like Mike, he also grew up playing in church and singing with his grandmother. He said he would love to coach Mike and they’d gonna go far in the competition.
Kelly said she loved the song that Mike performed. She could tell he could play piano off the bat so she almost didn’t turn around. Kelly joked she could play chords. She said Mike is very talented. “I love all those runs. It was effortless. You showed us all that. So I cannot wait to see what you show us in the Battles, in the Knockouts. It’s gonna be pretty incredible.”
Blake Shelton said he thought Mike was a girl singing and wondered how old “she” is. “Because you were singing notes in a place in your voice that is incredible.” He said he was shocked when he turned around. “And I think that’s what you’re gonna do every time you get on this stage man, is blow people away. Let’s continue to shock everybody.”
Nick Jonas said that if he were in Mike’s shoes, he’d probably pick John. “But I’ll say this. Wouldn’t it be nice to win the competition having made the choice no one expected and look up and say, ‘Wow’? Go with me and watch us win this thing. I’m down for that journey.”
John said Nick is new but very good in convincing people to join his team. “But I think you want to go with somebody who’s already won The Voice…Bet on somebody that’s already won.”
Kelly told Mike, “Just so you know, every pianist that also sing that comes out here is gonna be on his team. I’m just saying. I’m just here for you, Mike. I’m letting you know. Ain’t no person out there that plays piano picking one of us…If you want to stand out, ain’t got any males on my team. Ain’t nobody playing a piano. I’m just saying it’s an open lane.”
John responded by saying Mike is not a lane filler but a category breaker. “You are you and you have the ability to win this competition if you keep doing what you did today.”
Mike’s mom came onstage and when asked for advice, she said, “John.” While Kelly and Nick might have given up, Blake pointed to himself and said, “Hey, it’s okay to disappoint your mom every now and then, man. Part of being a son.”
