Jacob Miller (age 29) from Eden, Wisconsin performed “The Times They Are A-Changin’” by Bob Dylan during the Blind Auditions of The Voice 2020 (Season 18).
“The Times They Are a-Changin'” is a song written by Bob Dylan and released as the title track of his 1964 album of the same name. It reached number 9 on the UK Singles Chart and was ranked number 59 on Rolling Stone’s 2004 list of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time”.
Jacob Miller’s rendition of Dylan’s song got a three-chair-turn from The Voice judges/coaches. Kelly was the first one to turn her chair, followed by Blake Shelton and Nick Jonas.
Nick Jonas said he thinks Jacob Miller’s voice is incredible and later sort of offered him a collaboration with the Jonas brothers. Kelly Clarkson said it would be interesting to see how Jacob would put a spin on the current stuff of singer-songwriters. John Legend said Jacob gave a powerful performance. Blake Shelton loved Jacob’s guitar-playing and said Jacob should not be pushed into doing things that don’t represent who he is.
Eventually, Jacob Miller chose to be with Team Nick Jonas.
Episode: 4 (March 9, 2020)
Coach: Nick Jonas
Song: “The Times They Are A-Changin'” by Bob Dylan
Nick Jonas told Jacob that his voice is “incredible” and congratulated him for getting a three-chair-turn on the biggest TV show in the world.
Kelly Clarkson said Jacob obviously loves Bob Dylan. She asked what other artists he’s interested in. After learning that Jacob grew up on ragtime, early jazz music, and folk music, Kelly said, “I would love to see how we’d translate what you’re doing and still stay in that vein, but almost do it with songs maybe people know nowadays to almost introduce people to a lost art.” She said people don’t play that on the radio anymore. She’d like to take the likes of Brandi Carliles and the Kacey Musgraves, people with singer-songwriter stuff and see Jacob put his spin on it. She said she’s a big fan of Jacob and thinks he’s very talented.
Blake Shelton said , “You have a very specific thing that you do that you need to be protective of on this show. You can’t be an experiment. And you can’t be pushed into things that don’t represent who you are.” He said he loves the way Jacob plays the guitar.
John Legend said that Jacob gave a powerful performance and said they need more artists like him on The Voice.
Nick Jonas asked if Jacob is a songwriter and he replied in the affirmative, saying he mostly plays original music. Nick Jonas said that’s what excites him and regardless of the outcome of Jacob’s experience on The Voice, “I would be excited to spend some time with you in the studio, write some music , find what you want to say, who you want to be as an artist.” Then Nick says he and his brothers are prepping for the next stages in music, and mixing Jacob’s voice with the three of them (Jonas brothers) “could be really interesting.”
John Legend had to ask if Nick is offering Jacob a position in Jonas brothers. Blake Shelton said it sounded like it. Nick said no, and there’s already a fourth Jonas (Frankie?).
Kelly said she agrees that Jacob and the Jonas brothers would really sound good. Nick commented, “a little collaboration vibe.” Nick joked that Jacob Jonas sounds good.
In the end, Jacob picked Nick as his coach for The Voice 2020 (Season 18).
The eighteenth season of the American reality television show The Voice premiered on February 24, 2020, on NBC. John Legend, Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton returned as coaches for their third, fifth and eighteenth seasons, respectively. Nick Jonas joined the panel as a new coach, replacing Gwen Stefani.
