In one of the most dramatic moments in the season finale of The Bachelor 2020 (Season 24), Peter Weber (age 28) was shown breaking off his engagement with Hannah Ann Sluss (age 23).
Peter Weber proposed and got engaged to Hannah Ann Sluss during the Final Rose Ceremony where his other top pick, Madison Prewett was absent. Madison went home after breaking up with Peter earlier on.
Hannah Ann, a model from Powell, Tennessee, also had second thoughts on whether she will leave or not before the final rose ceremony. But she decided to stick with Peter and got a proposal from him.
But as it turns out, Peter proposed in part because his family expressed preference for Hannah Ann. In the end, he realized that it’s Madison that he really loves.
So Peter decided to break up with Hannah Ann, who put him in his place with her strong words. Peter’s mom Barb, shown in a box on the screen as the clip was shown to a live audience, applauded Hannah Ann as she chastised Peter.
Hannah Ann, who handled the breakup well, told Peter why he didn’t just let her go, instead of taking away the engagement away from her. As Peter said sorry, Hannah said, “Sorry for what? Cannot be man enough to follow through with your words, not being true to your words? Not being true to your feelings? Is that what you’re sorry for?”
When Peter said he never envisioned the breakup happening between them, Hannah Ann’s sarcasm sliced the air, “Then , why is it happening now?”
Peter said he’s trying to be honest with himself as much as he can, that he cannot give his entire heart to her and “you know why that is.”
“Torn and conflicted Peter, all throughout I stood by your side. And you took the most precious moment I could ever imagine away from me because you selfishly just did not want me to walk away. You could have sent me home, whatever the case would have been. I can’t even look at you anymore. I just need someone who’s gonna be true to their words, not be torn and conflicted 90% of the time, ’cause it affected a lot of people,” Hannah Ann said. She continued with finality, “I don’t need anything more from you, you’ve done enough damage.”
After those stinging words, Hannah Ann gave back Peter the engagement ring and said, “We’re done, I mean that.”
In the background, Peter’s mom Barbara was applauding.
Peter tried to explain to Hannah Ann again, but she said Peter can’t be true to his words so why would she hear him out? “I feel betrayed enough. You betrayed me and you know it, right? (Peter nodded.) See, that’s all I need to hear. And I’ll be able to move forward knowing that you’ve owned up to it. I want to get my life back on track now where it originally was before. You know I’m strong and I’ve been my own rock throughout this. You don’t have to worry about me.”
With Peter breaking up the engagement with Hannah Ann, it was clear that he did so because he was choosing Madison.
In the live show, amid the strong objection from his family – especially his mother Barbara who appears to expect their relationship to fail, Peter said that he and Madison taking it one day at a time is probably the smartest thing to do. He said they probably have a million and one obstacles, but he seems determined to make a go with Madison. And that’s the way The Bachelor 2020 ended, Peter did not propose to Madison, but they are apparently trying to stay together despite their differences.
