Married couple Bob and Susan Howard (Rob Corddry and Alicia Silverstone) decide to see a marriage counselor named Judy Small (Michaela Watkins), who recently relocated close to their home in L.A. Judy appears competent, intelligent, and trustworthy, with a track record of other couples that she’s treated successfully. But Bob and Susan’s particular emotional dynamic is a trigger for Judy’s dark and conflicted impulses. Judy treats Bob and Susan separately, and puts them at odds with one another through a series of manipulations, bringing their marriage to the breaking point.

In May 2018, it was announced Sarah Shahi had joined the cast of the film, with William Teitler directing from a screenplay by Nancy Doyne, based upon her novel Judy Small. In July 2018, Alicia Silverstone, Rob Corddry and Michaela Watkins joined the cast of the film.
Gravitas Ventures acquired distribution rights to the film in March 2020 and set it for an April 17, 2020, release.
Bad Therapy is Hollywood producer William Teitler’s feature directorial debut. Teitler worked as producer and production manager and is known for The Polar Express (2004), Zathura: A Space Adventure (2005) and Jumanji: The Next Level (2019).
American actress and author Alicia Silverstone (age 43) portrays Susan Howard in the film.
