Sophia Wackerman (age 20), a UCLA jazz major from Long Beach, California sang a cover of “Somewhere (There’s a Place for Us)” from the Broadway musical West Side Story during the Hollywood Week – Solos round on American Idol 2020 (Season 18).
Wackerman had an unremarkable Hollywood Week – Duets round with her bestfriend and real-life roomie Sarah Isen and hopes to win back the American Idol judges with her solo performance. “I definitely have to knock it out of the park for solo rounds. I’m not sure how well I will do tonight, but I’m really hoping we both get through today,” she told in-house mentor Bobby Bones.
And knock it out of the park, she did. American Idol judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan gave Sophie a standing ovation for her outstanding rendition.
