Mosean Wilson (age 23), a nonprofit employee from Springfield, Illinois performed his original song “Slipped Away” for his audition in American Idol 2020 (Season 18).
An only child who was raised by his grandparents, he said his father run the streets and died of drug overdose a couple of years ago, when Mosean just had his baby. He said it’s been a rocky road sometimes but he believes God doesn’t put you through something you cannot bear. He’s been through a lot and said, “…everything that I sing about, it’s like it’s got a reflection of it. You know, so I wanna make the people feel today where I’m coming from with this.”
American Idol judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan were blown away by Mosean’s touching performance. Katy Perry couldn’t help but cry a bit when she praised him and said he has an incredible voice. Luke Bryan got misty-eyed while Mosean sang and said Mosean is proving himself perfectly. Lionel Richie said that Mosean was honest and genuine and gave him the “Richie hug”.
For all his painful past, Mosean’s future looks rosy now as he was handed a Golden Ticket to Hollywood.
Mosean Wilson’s song was simple but it was sang from the heart, and the judges readily felt its authenticity.
Lionel Richie asked Mosean to stop in the middle of his performance, probably thinking they heard enough to make a decision.
Judges Comments:
Luke Bryan said, “You’re what’s it all about, buddy. We can just see your willingness to prove yourself. That’s what this whole life is about sometimes. And in my opinion, you’re doin’ it perfectly.”
Mosean Wilson said he’s lost for words and it’s just a pleasure to be with the American Idol judges and being able to perform. “I waited for this moment,” he said.
Katy Perry told Mosean, “You have an incredible voice. And I’m really moved by it. I don’t think you’ve ever had the people that want to invest in you, like we want to invest in you.”
Lionel Richie said, “We felt you.” Lionel approached Mosean and gave him the “Richie hug”. He said, “It’s an honor for us to show…Listen, you’re trying to pick yourself up, man. You’re trying to build your life. All the mistakes you made. You’re trying to erase them. And your talent is your way out of all of this madness. I love what you did. I love who you are, your honesty, you’re genuine. And you’ve got a little family that you started. We are now standing behind you, vouching for you…And I want you to show America and the world the “you”, that you want to present.”
American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television and will air Sundays at 8/7c. Ryan Seacrest continues his role as the show’s host and Bobby Bones returns as the in-house mentor. Despite budget cuts, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie come back as judges for their third season of the series.
