Louis Knight (age 19) from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Francisco Martin (age 19) from San Francisco, California performed “Breakeven” by the Irish pop rock band The Script during the Hollywood Week – Duets on American Idol 2020 (Season 18).
Francisco and Louis were seen as having some kind of rivalry, being compared with each other by the other contestants. But in a bold move, they decided to pair for the Hollywood Week – Duets. It turns out that they have a lot in common from being singer-songwriters to having the same musical influences.
Their practice went well the night before their performance. But a few hours before going onstage, Francisco’s confidence has evaporated and he started forgetting 3 or 4 lines of the song. Louis gave Francisco some pep talk, saying, “You have it bro. You seriously have it. Right now the only thing we can do is just do our absolute best”
Though Francisco indeed forgot some of the lines, Louis was quick to catch him during their performance. Katy Perry praised Louis in doing that move.
Most of the American Idol judges’ comments were focused on boosting Francisco’s confidence. Katy Perry told Francisco it’s ok to make mistakes and forget words because artists do it all the time, though he shouldn’t give up and let the audience know. Luke Bryan said that Francisco has to trust them and the people around him that he is good, while Lionel told him that he was born “enough”.
Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan decided to let Louis Knight and Franciso Martin go through, advancing them to the next round of American Idol 2020 (Season 18).
“Breakeven” was released in November 2008 as the third single from The Script’s first album, The Script (2008). The song peaked at number 21 in the United Kingdom and at number 12 in the United States Billboard Hot 100.
Judges Comments:
Katy Perry said, “Louis, good job on not letting your friend hang out to dry. That’s what a good friend does. Francisco, if you make a mistake, if you forget the words, that’s okay. We do it all the time. Just don’t give up and don’t show defeat. You can go backstage and kick a trash can if you need to. But like, don’t let the audience know.”
Luke Bryan asked if Francisco have always got this nervous. Francisco said it’s not really nerves but “more of me not believing in myself as much as other people do.”
Luke continued, “I’m just gonna say it. We have tremendous hopes and dreams for you guys. I know I do (Lionel and Katy agreed.) You need to trust us and the people around you that you are this good. Because you are.”
Lionel Richie said, “If you can just put this thought in your head, you were born enough, okay? There’s nothing you have to prove except to yourself, you understand me?”
Katy Perry announced the verdict of the judges. She said, “We have a lot of hope in the both of you. But unfortunately, only one will win. But you two, you’re both going through.”
American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television and will air Sundays and Mondays at 8/7c until the live shows. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, filming of American Idol is temporarily suspended and the production will assess things on a weekly basis.
Ryan Seacrest continues his role as the show’s host and Bobby Bones returns as the in-house mentor. Despite budget cuts, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie come back as judges for their third season of the series.
