Lauren Mascitti (age 27), a nurse and musician from Nashville, Tennessee, sang a beautiful original song titled “If I Can Lose You”, which she co-wrote with her friend Rene Martin, during the Auditions round of American Idol 2020 (Season 18).
American Idol judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke judges thought that Mascitti’s song was great and that she is a great storyteller.
Lauren, who came into the audition accompanied by her fiancé – popular American singer-songwriter Shawn Camp, got a Golden Ticket to Hollywood.
Lauren said she grew up singing gospel music and was raised and adopted by her grandparents, who were very supportive of her passion for music. When she expressed her desire to go to Nashville to be a songwriter, they said they will move with her but she had to get a degree first. So she went to nursing in Ohio and got her first nursing job in Nashville. She said she loves her job and had gotten a lot of inspiration from her nursing career for her music. Lauren said her biggest fan is her Nana and her fiancé Shawn Camp.
After Lauren’s performance, Katy Perry commented, “That was very moving. I love the feeling and emotion in your voice.”
Lionel Richie said he was a sucker for a good songwriter. “I think what I love the most is that you have this silky quality of a storyteller. And that’s the part I really fell in love with.”
Luke Bryan said, ” You know we had Laci Kay Booth last year who was kind of smoky and…But she even had a little bit lower voice than you did. But she did so well because it was so her thing. Like I said, are you gonna go stand beside some Kelly Clarkson belter? No, but are you gonna be able to walk out there and really hold a room with your style? Potentially, yes.”
Katy summed it up, “Best storyteller wins. So, if you tell a story and we believe you through and through, we’re gonna subscribe.”
All of the judges voted “Yes” to Lauren Mascitti. Her fiance Shawn – who had written songs for country singers like Garth Brooks, Blake Shelton, and Luke Bryan – said he’s a Yes for sure. FYI, Camp co-wrote the big hits “Two Piña Coladas” by Garth Brooks, “How Long Gone” by Brooks & Dunn, “Nobody But Me” by Blake Shelton, “Would You Go with Me” by Josh Turner, and more.
Lauren said in a post-audition interview, “It means everything to be able to go home and bring back this Golden Ticket to my Nana and my Papa. They’ve sacrificed so much for me to be able to do music. I know they’re gonna be super excited, and I just can’t wait to tell them.”
