Genavieve Linkowski (age 21) from Michigan and Travis Finlay (age 25) from New York sang a cover of “The Prayer” by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli during the Hollywood Week – Duets on American Idol 2020 (Season 18).
Linkowski said she does not do duets anymore since her sister Corinn passed away in a car accident last year, but it would mean so much for her to get through.
Travis and Genavieve’s rendition stunned American Idol judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie, and rewarded the duo with a standing ovation.
Katy Perry thought Travis was so good and his choices were great and surprising. To Genavieve, Katy told her she has grown so much in two years but she needs to grow some more.
Both Travis and Genavieve got through, meaning they will advance to the next round of American Idol 2020.
In an interview after her duet with Travis, a tearful Genavieve said that she knew her sister would be proud of her for getting through the next round of the competition.
“The Prayer” is a song written by David Foster, Carole Bayer Sager, Alberto Testa and Tony Renis. It was originally recorded in two solo versions for the 1998 film Quest for Camelot, in English by Canadian singer Celine Dion and in Italian by Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli. A duet between Dion and Bocelli later appeared on their respective studio albums and was released as an airplay single on 1 March 1999. The song won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1999 and a Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals in 2000. It peaked at number 22 on the Billboard’s US Adult Contemporary and at number 1 on the US Classical Digital Songs.
American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television and will air Sundays and Mondays at 8/7c until the live shows. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, filming of American Idol is temporarily suspended and the production will assess things on a weekly basis.
Ryan Seacrest continues his role as the show’s host and Bobby Bones returns as the in-house mentor. Despite budget cuts, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie come back as judges for their third season of the series.
