Dillon James (age 26), a construction worker from Bakersfield, California performed “The Times They Are a-Changin’” by Bob Dylan during the Hawaii Showcase and Final Judgment round of American Idol 2020 (Season 18).
“The Times They Are a-Changin'” was released as the title track of Bob Dylan’s 1964 album of the same name. It reached number 9 on the UK Singles Chart. The song was ranked number 59 on Rolling Stone’s 2004 list of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time”.
American Idol judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie were pleased with Dillon’s performance. Katy Perry said that Dillon looks like a star. After Dillon’s rendition, Katy commented “I wish he would like, lean in to the emotional part of his voice a little bit more.”

Dillon said in the interview offstage, “There’s a lot of me in the way. But I’m just happy. I’m in Paradise, I’m singing, it’s a beautiful thing.”
