Devon Alexander (age 23), a singer-songwriter from California, performed “Not in That Way” by Sam Smith during his audition on American Idol 2020 (Season 18).
“Not in That Way” is a track from Sam Smith’s 2014 album “In The Lonely Hour”. Like the other songs in the album, the song was inspired by Sam Smith’s unrequited love for one person.
Devon was pretty nervous when he sang Smith’s song, but he gave an amazing rendition just the same.
Luke Bryan thought Devon was kind of like a cool dude and a crooner, a description to which Katy Perry agreed. Lionel Richie thought Devon can handle the competition well.
The judges were unanimous in their decision to give Devon a Golden Ticket to Hollywood, with all of them voting “Yes”.
Judges Comments:
Luke Bryan said, “I thought it was a great audition. I think you really check a box for me. Kind of like a crooner. I kind of like your vibe, you sing like a cool dude. So, yeah, I’m into it.”
Katy Perry readily agreed with Luke.
Lionel Richie said, “I gotta tell you, I’m glad you showed up here. The competition is coming but I think you’re up for the challenge. ”
The judges voted “Yes” to Devon and they gave him a Golden Ticket to Hollywood.
In a post-sudition interview, Devon said, “I grew up watching this show and I’m a part of it now.”
American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television and will air Sundays at 8/7c. Ryan Seacrest continues his role as the show’s host and Bobby Bones returns as the in-house mentor. Despite budget cuts, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie come back as judges for their third season of the series.
