Cyniah Elise (age 17) from Atlanta, Georgia and Makayla Phillips (age 18) from Canyon Lake, California, performed “The Prayer” by Celine Dion during the Hollywood Week – Duets round of American Idol 2020 (Season 18).
Both power vocalists, the teens gave an incredible performance, prompting American Idol judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan to give them a standing ovation, with Richie exclaiming “Wow! Wow wow wow!” as he clapped enthusiastically.
The judges were so impressed with Cyniah and Makayla’s rendition, and decided to let both of them go through the next round of American Idol 2020.
Judges Comments:
Luke Bryan commented, “That was like a movie.” Katy Perry agreed.
Katy Perry said, “You guys sang that so well. I think you guys did it such justice. It was so beautiful. I think all of your subtleties and choices between the two of you were really great… You divas, yes, you are both going through.”
“The Prayer” is a song written by David Foster, Carole Bayer Sager, Alberto Testa and Tony Renis. It was originally recorded in two solo versions for the 1998 film Quest for Camelot, in English by Canadian singer Celine Dion and in Italian by Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli. A duet between Dion and Bocelli later appeared on their respective studio albums and was released as an airplay single on 1 March 1999. The song won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1999 and a Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals in 2000. It peaked at number 22 on the Billboard’s US Adult Contemporary and at number 1 on the US Classical Digital Songs.
American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television and will air Sundays at 8/7c. Ryan Seacrest continues his role as the show’s host and Bobby Bones returns as the in-house mentor. Despite budget cuts, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie come back as judges for their third season of the series.
