Thunderstorm Artis of Hawaii sang a stunning version of Blackbird by the English rock band The Beatles during the Blind Auditions of The Voice 2020 (Season 18).
“Blackbird” is from the 1968 double album The Beatles (also known as “the White Album”). It was written by Paul McCartney and credited to Lennon–McCartney, and performed as a solo piece by McCartney.
All of The Voice coaches/judges Kelly Clarkson, Nick Jonas, John Legend, and Blake Shelton pressed their red buttons, giving Thunderstorm a 4-chair-turn. Kelly, Nick, and John turned their chairs almost simultaneously, less than 30 seconds after Thunderstorm started singing.
Episode: 3 (March 3, 2020)
Coach: John Legend
Song: “Blackbird” by The Beatles
Nick Jonas said Thunderstorm’s performance was unbelievable. He said Thunderstorm has a great name and said Thunderstorm’ vocal control was perfect.
Kelly said “When a voice like yours come along, and we turn around that quickly, that’s because we’re all very aware of what is standing onstage right now, which is someone who could win this competition.” Kelly said the coaches can’t do anything for Thunderstorm vocally since God has gifted it to him naturally. She thinks it would be cool if Thunderstorm take songs and totally twist it since that hits people and vote for it.
She thinks Thunderstorm will always do that in the show and that the coaches will only be his cheerleaders, and to help him navigate the competition aspect of The Voice. Kelly said she has navigated the competition as a singer before, and ended up winning. “So I can do that with you, I promise”
Blake congratulaed Thunderstorm for being “ridiculously talented.” He said Thunderstorm is so connected with his guitar, and seem to give it importance more than anything going on. Blake said it comes across like it’s pre-recorded. He said he would be honored to have Thunderstorm in his team because he wants the young man to win.
John said that Thunderstorm’ tone was magical. One second in and they know that he belongs on The Voice.
