Darious Lyles (age 30) of Chicago, Illinois sang a cover of “How Do You Sleep?” by English singer Sam Smith during The Blind Auditions of The Voice 2020 (Season 18).
“How Do You Sleep?” is a song co-written by Smith with Savan Kotecha, Max Martin and Ilya, released on 19 July 2019. It peaked at number 83 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and at number 37 on the US Mainstream Top 40.
Coaches Kelly Clarkson and John Legend turned their chairs almost at the same time for Darious Lyles.
Asked if he ever dreamed of being on The Voice, Darious said it feels like everything right now because he went through a lot. He lost his adoptive parents and just reconnected with his biological mother and that means a lot to him.
John Legend said he loved Darious’ low range and though there were pitch problems, a good coach can help him with that.
Kelly Clarkson found Darious Lyle to be a very talented singer and that his runs were very much like Whitney’s because they were going up the whole time.
Darious Lyle picked John Legend to be his coach for The Voice 2020 (Season 18).

Blake Shelton said he did not hit his button because he can tell that there’s a home for him between Kelly and John. But Blake said he’s going to stay out of it but he’s very happy for Darious.
John Legend said, “What I loved about your performance was particularly your low range. Some of your tight runs you were doing down there and how you elevated. There were a little bit of pitch problems, but that’s something that good coaches are there to help you with.”
Nick Jonas said he is happy for Darious. He thinks Darious is incredibly talented and he’s excited what Darious will do in the competition.
Kelly Clarkson commented, “I feel like we’re put on this planet to be vessels for messages. And we build each other up and you can really hear that in your voice. And that was my favorite part. And then, it’s interesting most singers have runs that go down, and yours were going up almost the whole time.” Kelly likened those runs to Whitney Houston’s. She thought it was really tasteful and she thinks he is a very talented singer and would love to have him on her team.
