The Flash is an American superhero TV series developed by Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg, and Geoff Johns, airing on The CW. It is based on the DC Comics character Barry Allen / Flash, a costumed superhero crime-fighter with the power to move at superhuman speeds.
The series is a spin-off from Arrow and exists in the same fictional universe. It follows Barry Allen (Grant Gustin), a crime scene investigator who gains super-human speed, which he uses to fight criminals, including others who have also gained superhuman abilities.
Initially envisioned as a backdoor pilot, the positive reception Gustin received during two appearances as Barry on Arrow led to executives choosing to develop a full pilot to make use of a larger budget and help flesh out Barry’s world in more detail. The series is primarily filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
The Flash premiered in North America on October 7, 2014, where the pilot became the second-most watched premiere in the history of The CW, after The Vampire Diaries in 2009. It has been well received by critics and audiences, and won the People’s Choice Award for “Favorite New TV Drama” in 2014.
The series, together with Arrow, has spun characters out to their own show titled Legends of Tomorrow, which premiered on January 21, 2016. On January 31, 2019, The CW renewed The Flash for a sixth season, which premiered on October 8, 2019.
American actor and singer Grant Gustin (age 30) plays the title role of Barry Allen / The Flash. Gustin rose to prominence as Sebastian Smythe on the Fox series Glee prior to taking on the role of The Flash. His film credits include Affluenza (2014), Krystal (2017), and the short film Tom and Grant (2018).
Candice Patton portrays Iris West-Allen, Barry Allen’s wife who works at Central City Picture News as a journalist. Patton is an American actress best known for her role in The Flash, for which she got a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress on Television. She also has a recurring role in the BET television series The Game. Patton also appeared in the web series Sorority Forever and the soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful. Her film credits include The Craigslist Killer (2011), Commander and Chief (2012), and The Guest (2014).
