Saveria (22) a guitar teacher from London, Ontario, Canada, sang her original song “Tell Me This is Real” during the Auditions round in American Idol 2020 (Season 18).
She said she’s been doing music more than half of her life. Saveria was part of the popular Mini Pop Kids in Canada when she was 9 years old.
Saveria had an amazing performance but the judges made quite a controversial decision in the end.
Although Katy Perry thinks Saveria is a great singer, judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan gave her “No” votes. Even when Katy seemed to have a meltdown after hearing their comments, Lionel and Luke did not change their minds.
Fans of the show have slammed the decision of Lionel and Luke about Saveria. Even if she did not get a ticket to Hollywood during the audition, some are really hoping she would come back as a wildcard. They also think she could be another Tori Kelly in the making.
Lionel Richie told Saveria, “You had moments of great vocal stuff and then all of a sudden I kind of drifted back and drifted off again. I wasn’t quite paying attention. Your job is to keep me engaged.”
Katy reacted by saying, “What?” And Lionel said, “I just didn’t feel it guys.”
Luke Bryan said, “No, I’m with you. You just stood up there and worked your butt off in front of us. But it’s not making me levitate out of my chair.”
Katy Perry put down her pen forcefully and said, “Well, you know what, you’re a great singer. You are a gymnast singer. You can do cartwheels and backflips and do it all. You have so much potential.”
When Katy asked to take a vote, she immediately said, “I’m a Yes.”.
Lionel said, “I just think it’s a No for now. (Katy reacted with, “What, are you crazy?”) I’m going to say it because I think she needs to do the discovery work. To send her through right now in generality, is not gonna help her.”
Katy said that they will be able to mentor her and to talk to her. She told Saveria she needs people to steer her and tell her the tough truth.
Luke Bryan said, “My gut tells me I’m gonna be a “No”.
At that point, Katy Perry said, “You are crazy”. Then she went nuts, growled and pushed out things from the table.
Asked by Luke if she believes in Saveria, Katy Perry said, “Yeah, a hundred percent. I don’t know if you’re the next American Idol but you deserve a ticket to Hollywood.”
Despite Katy’s protests, Lionel and Luke were adamant in their decisions. While Saveria shook the hands of Lionel and Luke, Katy Perry went berserk, screamed in a corner and punched a logo of American Idol inside the audition room shouting, “I dont’t believe anymore.” A bit later, Katy was shown running barefoot in the hallway and to the camera she said, “I need to get their hearing checked.” That’s a comment a lot of people agreed with.
American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television and will air Sundays at 8/7c. Ryan Seacrest continues his role as the show’s host and Bobby Bones returns as the in-house mentor. Despite budget cuts, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie come back as judges for their third season of the series.
