Music teacher Margie Mays (age 26) of Wilmington, Delaware sang a cover of “I Found A Boy” by Adele during her audition on American Idol 2020 (Season 18).
“I Found a Boy” is a song written and recorded by Adele, released as a bonus track on her second studio album 21.
Margie was part of the Top 40 performers of American Idol 2019 (Season 17). She got eliminated after The Showcase Round held at Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa in Ko Olina, Hawaii.
Margie Mays’ audition for this season got mixed reactions from the judges, and all agreed it wasn’t the right song for her. But in the end, she got a Golden Ticket to Hollywood for the second time, with Yes votes from Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan.
Margie Mays said she had worked on her craft since the last season and she is now a lot more professional. She said, “I wanna own it today.”
She took along her boyfriend Jonny West to the audition to accompany her on the piano. He also auditioned this season and Margie Mays said the ideal outcome is for both of them to take Golden Tickets. [See: American Idol 2020 Jonny West audition]
Before she started her piece, Margie and Katy greeted each other with hands over their heads and sounded off with their peculiar language.
Luke Bryan asked if Margie has been sedated because she was not as jumpy as before. She said she’s calmer and she’s now Margie 2.0.
After Margie’s performance, Luke commented, “Pretty much everytime you sing for us last year, you hit bad notes. You didn’t hit one bad note now. Now I wouldn’t say that you captured my emotion wholeheartedly with that song but you have become a much better singer. And that’s really hard to do.”
Lionel Richie said, “What I was worried about last year was you were a nervous wreck to the point of crash landing. I like the person that you are, coming back now.”
“I’ve always been a big fan of you,” Katy Perry said when it was her turn to comment. She continued, “That being said, I don’t think that that was the right song. I’ve seen you choose better songs that really pull us in. I mean, look I like your personality. I’m not telling you not be Margie Mays. Don’t change, don’t get serious because that’s boring.”
Margie said “I’m not changed, I want it to be like I’m on a mission today and I wanted to make that clear.”
Explaining his vote, Lionel said, “I want you to take us there. It’s a Yes for me. I think you can handle this.”
Katy said, “I didn’t feel like you gave us what I felt and saw the first time I met you. It’s wild but I’m saying this ’cause I’m such a big fan of you. But it’s a “No” for me.”
Luke Bryan said, “I might agree with Katy. But I’m gonna give you another shot. Yes, you’re going to Hollywood.”
American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television and will air Sundays at 8/7c. Ryan Seacrest continues his role as the show’s host and Bobby Bones returns as the in-house mentor. Despite budget cuts, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie come back as judges for their third season of the series.
