Jonny West (age 23), a piano teacher from Murietta, California sang an original song (title remains unknown) during the Auditions round of American Idol 2020 (Season 18).
Playing the piano while he sang, judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan were obviously impressed with his voice. Then when Jonny started rapping in the middle of his song, Katy Perry’s eyes widened in surprise.
Jonny auditioned at the same time as his girlfriend Margie Mays, a former American Idol contestant who managed to get into the Top 40 of American Idol 2019 (Season 17).
Luke Bryan compared Jonny’s artistry to American Idol 2019 runner-up Alejandro Aranda while Katy Perry believes that Jonny West will go further in American Idol than Margie.
Needless to say, Jonny got a golden ticket to Hollywood, just like his sweetheart Margie who also got a golden ticket for American Idol 2020.
Jonny said he went to Margie’s audition in 2019 just to support and root her on. “It was exciting,” he said. When the opportunity came, they both wanted to be on American Idol.
Katy Perry commented, “You are a silent but deadly killer. When you sing, it’s so pro. You know how to sing into the mike, you know how to enunciate. It’s good, the lyrics come out, the sound is pleasing to the ear. You know, I don’t want this for you when you’re in a relationship, but you may go further than Margie.”
Jonny said that he’s there because of Margie, whom he accompanied on the piano when she auditioned for this season’s American Idol.
Katy Perry replied, “No, I get it, that’s really sweet, all of that. But you need to know, just understand, that this is something that could possibly change your life.”
Lionel commented he is happy to see Jonny. “You have no idea, artists come through every once in a while and anoint us. And I like the ability for you to go left and right, and then straight down the center. That rap just took me out in left field, I did not know where you were going until I realized you were going. You have everything American Idol needs to make you an American Idol.”
Luke Bryan said, “Man that puts you really close to the Alejandro lane in my opinion. That’s just special stuff.”
Katy Perry and Lionel agreed with Luke’s assessment. They all voted “YES” for Jonny to get a Golden Ticket to Hollywood
Jonny West has released an EP titled Oh in 2019, with four songs “Feel Like Myself”, “I’ll See”, “Glow” and “Heaven”, which are all posted on his YouTube channel which currently has 540+ subscribers as of this writing.
American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television and will air Sundays at 8/7c. Ryan Seacrest continues his role as the show’s host and Bobby Bones returns as the in-house mentor. Despite budget cuts, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie come back as judges for their third season of the series.
