Jared Lettow (age 26), an engineer from Sta. Barbara, California yodeled like there’s no tomorrow during his audition on American Idol 2020 (Season 18).
With a name sounding like the American actor and singer-songwriter Jared Leto, American Idol judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan couldn’t help but ask him about it. Lettow said his name draws attention and is often an ice breaker=, but he also thought about changing his name. The judges suggested his middle name Nells might be a good idea.
Jared said from the start that he’s a yodeler, prompting Katy Perry to call him Jared Lettow the Yodeler. He then performed what seems like an original song, with extreme yodeling all throughout the song. The judges comically lip synced with him. But it got way too much that Katy had to yell “Stop! Stop on yodeling!”
The yodeler from Calfornia did not get a Golden ticket to Hollywood but got the privilege of teaching Katy Perry and Luke Bryan how to yodel. Katy also said she will see Jared in a bar in Santa Barbara and they will yodel together.
Jared Lettow is a graduate from Iowa State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering in May of 2018.
The judges unanimously voted “No”, after Jared’s performance. Katy Perry said, “I think you definitely have one of the coolest party tricks I’ve ever heard. But I just don’t think it’s right for American Idol. Jared Lettow, it’s a ‘No-del’.”
In a post-audition interview, Jared Lettow said, “I might have gotten a “No” but I’m not gonna stop yodeling.”
American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television and will air Sundays at 8/7c. Ryan Seacrest continues his role as the show’s host and Bobby Bones returns as the in-house mentor. Despite budget cuts, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie come back as judges for their third season of the series.
