After losing her sister to a car crash, Genavieve Linkowski (age 21) of Goodrich, Michigan returns to the Auditions round of American Idol 2020 (Season 18). She sang a cover of “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You” by Michael Bolton, and brings American Idol judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie to tears.
“How Am I Supposed to Live Without You” is a song written in 1982 by Doug James and Michael Bolton. Laura Branigan recorded it and it became number one on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart and peaked at number twelve on the Hot 100 in 1983. Bolton’s own rendition reached number one on both Billboard Hot 100 and Adult Contmeporary Charts. It became a worldwide hit in early 1990 and won him a Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
Genavieve Linkowski first auditioned in American Idol back in 2018 and won a ticket to Hollywood, but never made it to the Top 24. For the second time in her life, Genavieve was handed a Golden Ticket to Hollywood by the judges, who were all moved by her performance.
Katy Perry said she felt the song “through and through”. She said, “You were singing that song from your pain that you’ve been through,” she said.
Lionel commented, “Tragedy can either destroy you or make you stronger. You have actually grown. You’re no longer singing, you’re performing, to the point where I just couldn’t stop watching you. It took a lot of guts to come back and stand up but I really must tell you I loved that performance and I look for you to go much further than last time.”
American Idol Season 18 premiered at 8PM, February 16, 2020 on ABC television and will air Sundays at 8/7c. Ryan Seacrest continues his role as the show’s host and Bobby Bones returns as the in-house mentor. Despite budget cuts, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie come back as judges for their third season of the series.
