Centring on the complex and challenging relationships between people who are connected through divorce, the film centres on Cami (Heather Graham), a single mother who reluctantly takes in her ex-husband’s second wife Rachel (Jodi Balfour) as a houseguest after his death has left her homeless. The film also stars Sophie Nélisse as Cami’s daughter Aster, and Abigail Pniowsky as Rachel’ daughter Talulah.
The film was shot in North Bay, Ontario in 2018.
The film premiered at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival. It had its second screening at the Cinéfest Sudbury International Film Festival.
Norman Wilner of Now gave the film a three-N rating, writing that “It’s a small, delicate drama – maybe too small, since the 80-minute running time has the effect of compressing certain emotional beats. (There’s also a climactic revelation that struck me as painfully obvious, though others didn’t see it coming.) But it’s not a bad thing when a film leaves you wishing it were longer, and Chin-Yee gets excellent, heartfelt work from all four of her leads.” Alex Hudson of Exclaim! rated the film 7 out of 10, and wrote that “The Rest of Us might have benefited from a slightly longer runtime; there are some major revelations towards the ends, so it feels a bit like it ends just as it’s getting going. But as a small-scale examination of a unique form of grief, it packs a lot of emotional complexity into a small package.”
