The much-anticipated series from Oscar-nominated writer Tony McNamara (THE FAVOURITE), The Great debuts on Hulu Friday, May 15. The Great is a satirical comedic drama that follows the unlikely rise and spectacular reign of feminist trailblazer Catherine the Great, the longest running female leader in Russian history.

The Great is an upcoming American drama web television miniseries that will premiere on Hulu.
The Great details “the rise to power of Catherine the Great and her explosive relationship with husband Peter, the emperor of Russia.”
On August 24, 2018, it was announced that Hulu was close to giving a pilot order to a miniseries about Catherine the Great. The series was expected to be written by Tony McNamara who was also set to serve as an executive producer alongside Elle Fanning and Marian Macgowan. Production companies involved with the pilot were slated to consist of Media Rights Capital, Echo Lake Entertainment, and Thruline Entertainment. On November 20, 2018, it was reported that Matt Shakman was directing the pilot. On February 11, 2019, it was announced during the Television Critics Association’s annual winter press tour that Hulu had given the production a series order.
Alongside the initial pilot announcement, it was confirmed that Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult had been cast in the pilot’s lead roles as Catherine the Great and her husband Peter III of Russia, respectively. In November 2018, it was announced that Phoebe Fox, Sacha Dhawan, Charity Wakefield, and Gwilym Lee had joined the cast of the pilot. Louis Hynes, known for his role as Klaus Baudelaire on Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, announced on September 2019 on his Instagram Stories saying “from unfortunate to great” that he has some role on the show too.
Elle Fanning is an American actress, model, and singer. She is best known for her recent works in a number of independent films, and her portrayal as Aurora in the Maleficent film series.
As the younger sister of actress Dakota Fanning, she made her film debut as the younger version of her sister’s character in the drama film I Am Sam (2001). As a child actress, she appeared in a string of films including Because of Winn-Dixie (2005), Babel (2006), Phoebe in Wonderland (2008), and Somewhere (2010).
Fanning’s breakthrough came in 2011 with her starring role in J. J. Abrams’ science-fiction film Super 8, for which her performance was praised by critics and earned her a Spotlight Award at the Hollywood Film Festival. In the wake of this success, she had leading roles in the films We Bought a Zoo (2011) and Ginger & Rosa (2012). She portrayed Princess Aurora in Maleficent (2014) and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019).
In recent years, she has made a transition into independent cinema with lead and supporting roles in films such as 3 Generations (2015), The Neon Demon (2016), 20th Century Women (2016), Mary Shelley (2017), The Beguiled (2017), I Think We’re Alone Now (2018), Galveston (2018), and Teen Spirit (2018).
