A young journalist and a young political aide become entangled in an emerging political scandal in Toronto in 2013 as they struggle to navigate adult life.
Like all their friends, Bram (Ben Platt) and Kamal (Mena Massoud) are struggling to climb the ladders at their respective workplaces: Bram at a newspaper, Kamal at City Hall. When Bram learns of a scandal involving Kamal’s larger-than-life boss, he seizes the moment to advance his career. Meanwhile, Kamal grapples with containing the story while maintaining his integrity.

Run This Town had its world premiere at South by Southwest on March 9, 2019. It is scheduled to be released in the United States and Canada on March 6, 2020, by Oscilloscope and Elevation Pictures.
The movie is based on the turbulent final year of Rob Ford’s tenure as the mayor of Toronto.
It was announced in March 2018 that Ben Platt, Nina Dobrev, Mena Massoud and Damian Lewis were cast in the film. Filming began the next month in Toronto. Jennifer Ehle, Scott Speedman and Gil Bellows were also added to the cast. Lewis, playing the role of Ford, was spotted on set in extensive makeup and donning a body suit.
American actor, singer, and songwriter Ben Platt (age 26) plays the lead role of the young journalist named Bram. Platt began his career in theater as a child and has appeared in Broadway productions of The Music Man (2002), The Book of Mormon (2012–2013), and Dear Evan Hansen (2015–2017), receiving multiple accolades for his performance as the title character in the latter, including the 2017 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical.
Platt also starred in Pitch Perfect (2012), Pitch Perfect 2 (2015), and Ricki and the Flash (2015). He currently stars in the Netflix TV show The Politician, for which he was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Television Series Musical or Comedy in 2019. He released his debut studio album, Sing to Me Instead, in March 2019.
Starring alongside Platt in Run This Town is Canadian actress Nina Dobrev (age 31), who plays the role of Ashley. Dobrev debuted as Mia Jones in the drama series Degrassi: The Next Generation. She later became known for portraying Elena Gilbert and Katherine Pierce on The CW’s supernatural drama series The Vampire Diaries. Dobrev’s film credits include The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012), Let’s Be Cops (2014), The Final Girls (2015), XXX: Return of Xander Cage (2017), and Flatliners (2017).
Dobrev was born in Bulgaria but immigrated with her family to Canada at age two and grew up in Toronto. She studied sociology at Ryerson University, but left early to pursue her acting career. Dobrev currently lives in Los Angeles.
Canadian actor Mena Massoud (age 28) plays the role of political aide Kamal in the movie Run This Town. Massoud is best known for starring as Aladdin in the 2019 live-action adaptation of the musical fantasy film of the same name. Prior to starring in Aladdin, Massoud appeared in TV series including Open Heart (2015) and Jack Ryan.
