This American drama web TV series was created by Samantha Stratton, who was also expected to serve as co-showrunner with Lara Olsen. Stratton and Olsen were also set to executive produce the series together with Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell with Matt Schwartz serving as a co-executive producer.
It was announced in October 2018 that Netflix had given the production a series order consisting of ten episodes.
With the announcement of the series, it was also confirmed that Emma Roberts would star in the series as Kat Baker. Roberts, who is best known for her starring roles in the FX anthology horror series American Horror Story (2013–present), dropped out of “Spinning Out” in October 2018, citing a scheduling conflict.
In December 2018, Kaya Scodelario had been cast to replace Roberts in the role of Kat Baker.
Scodelario is an English/Brazilian actress best known for her roles as Effy Stonem on the E4 teen drama Skins (2007–2010, 2013), Teresa in The Maze Runner film series (2014–2018), Carina Smyth in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) and Haley Keller in Crawl (2019). She also played the role of Carol Ann Boone, wife of Ted Bundy, in the controversial thriller “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile” (2019).
Joining Scodelario in the cast of “Spinning Out” are January Jones, Willow Shields, Evan Roderick, Johnny Weir, Sarah Wright Olsen, Will Kemp, Kaitlyn Leeb, Amanda Zhou, Mitchell Edwards, and Svetlana Efremova in series regular roles. Meanwhile, Charlie Hewson will be part of the series via his recurring role as Dr. Parker.
