America’s Got Talent: The Champions (often abbreviated as AGT: The Champions or simply AGTC) is a spin-off of America’s Got Talent (also known as AGT), a televised American talent show competition. Much like the main program, the spin-off was created by Simon Cowell, produced by Fremantle, and broadcast on the NBC television network, premiering on January 7, 2019. The program, which functions in a similar format to AGT, features a variety of participants from across the Got Talent franchise – winners, finalists, live round participants, and other notable entries – competing against each other across a series of preliminaries to secure a place in a grand final and a chance to win a cash prize and the title of America’s chosen “World Champion” within Got Talent.
The spin-off is hosted by Terry Crews, joined by a panel of judges – at present, the panel consist of America’s Got Talent judges, Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, and Howie Mandel, with Britain’s Got Talent judge Alesha Dixon joining for the second season. The contest is not held live on television, but is instead filmed in advance and broadcast as pre-recorded episodes; votes for the best acts are conducted in a different manner as a direct result. The series was renewed for a second season, set to premiere on January 6, 2020.
Simon Cowell was the first confirmed judge for the spin-off show. On July 27, 2018, it was confirmed that Mel B would also be a judge. On September 27, 2018, it was announced that Terry Crews would host the show and that Heidi Klum as well as Howie Mandel would be joining the judging panel bringing all four judges from the main series at the time to the spinoff. On September 26, 2019, Crews was confirmed to return as host for season two, along with Cowell, Mandel and Klum as judges, with singer and Britain’s Got Talent judge, Alesha Dixon, replacing Mel B.
Simon Cowell is an English television personality, businessman and record executive. He has judged on the British television talent competition series Pop Idol (2001–2003), The X Factor (2004–2010, 2014–present) and Britain’s Got Talent (2007–present), and the American television talent competition series American Idol (2002–2010), The X Factor (2011–2013), and America’s Got Talent (2016–present). Cowell is the principal, founder and chief executive of the British entertainment company Syco.
Howard Mandel is a Canadian comedian, actor, voice actor, and television host. He hosted the CNBC (originally NBC) game show Deal or No Deal, as well as the show’s daytime and Canadian-English counterparts. In 1987, Mandel starred alongside Amy Steel in the comedy film Walk Like a Man. From 1982 to 1988, Mandel played rowdy ER intern Dr. Wayne Fiscus on the NBC medical drama St. Elsewhere. He also created and starred in the children’s cartoon Bobby’s World, and judges on NBC’s America’s Got Talent.
