James Violet (age 20) and Kyndal Inskeep (age 22) of Team Gwen Stefani performed an amazing cover of “I Could Use a Love Song” during The Voice Battles 2019 (Season 17).
“I Could Use a Love Song” is a song recorded by Maren Morris released in 2017, which peaked at number one on the Billboard Country Airplay chart.
Both James and Kyndal received praises from The Voice judges.
Kelly Clarkson said their voices sound beautiful together. She described Kyndal’s voice as pure and angelic while James sounded more like “a dark angel who has fallen for his love”. She said James’ vibe is on point – his voice and its textures, his style, his performance are all believable, which puts him a little ahead of Kyndal. As to Kyndal, she said that the cool thing about her voice is that she doesn’t sound like anyone.
Blake Shelton noted that James probably had a hard time figuring out how the song could work for him, to which James readily agreed. And Blake said James did figure it out and that he really has a cool voice. As for Kyndal, Blake said she sang it quite differently from the original Maren Morris version, because it fits with her vibrato and that changed the pockets a bit, which made her performance “cool”. Blake said he’d go for Kyndal.
John Legend said he thought Kyndal would win the battle based on the first few lines she sang because while James was still finding his spot, Kyndal sang like she owned the song. He said he leans towards Kyndal but said that some of the notes that James was hitting were “thrilling”.
Coach Gwen admitted that she always had her “heart wrapped around” Kyndal because her voice is so unique. As for James, she said she didn’t realize how interesting and unique James’ voice was until he sang the high notes during rehearsal. But in the end, Gwen picked Kyndal as the winner of the battle. She said later that Kyndal has so much character in her voice, which is something one can’t teach. Gwen thinks Kyndal’s unique voice will let her go far in the competition.
Before host Carson Daly finished his line that James is available for a save or steal, John Legend pressed his button hoping for a Steal, while Gwen pressed hers for the Save.
James was overwhelmed as Gwen and John “fought” over him. To Gwen’s statement “Come on. This coach loves you so much,” John countered with, “She was ready to toss you to the garbage heap.”
Who did James Violet choose as his Coach? No conclusion in that department. Will update you as soon as “The Voice” airs that portion.
