The 11-year-old violinist and cancer survivor Tyler Butler-Figueroa performed an amazing version of ‘Survivor’ at the Finals of America’s Got Talent 2019 (Season 14).
‘Survivor’ is a song recorded by American R&B group Destiny’s Child and released in 2001. It was written and composed by group member Beyoncé, Anthony Dent, and Mathew Knowles. The song peaked at number 2 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and is number 40 on Billboard’s list of 100 Greatest Girl Group Songs of All Time.
Tyler Butler-Figueroa is Simon Cowell’s Golden Buzzer act, and with every performance, he proved worthy of that distinction. His lively rendition of ‘Survivor’, was well-appreciated by the audience and AGT judges Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, Julianne Hough, and Gabrielle Union, who all gave him a standing ovation.
Simon Cowell said he is “bursting with pride” for Tyler and said the film about Tyler says so much about the impact that Tyler had. He surprised Tyler when he said, “And I also want to thank somebody, you may not know this, but Beyoncé personally cleared that song for you to sing. That is so gracious, and thank you so much for helping make one of the most special contestants’ dreams come true on the most important night of his life. Tyler, you’ve got a shot here.”
Howie Mandel said there’s nothing he can say to add to Simon’s comment except that, “I am so proud and so inspired to be here witnessing this. America’s gonna have a tough choice, you are worthy of being here, you’re worthy of winning and you are winning in life.” He then pointed to Gabrielle Union, about a comment on Tyler that she earlier told Howie.
Gabrielle Union said, “I said, that was the best performance, he saved the best for last. You were absolutely incredible. And the fact that ‘Queen B’ Beyonce blessed you, I mean listen Tyler, you did it kid, you really did it.”
