The Ndlovu Youth Choir from South Africa, led by their director Ralf Schmitt, gave an amazing rendition of Whitney Houston’s “Higher Love” at the semifinals of America’s Got Talent 2019 (Season 14).
The amazing spin on “Higher Love” and the lively performance of the Ndlovu Youth Choir earned a standing ovation from AGT judges Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, Julianne Hough, Gabrielle Union and guest judge Sean Hayes; as well as from the live audience at the Dolby Theatre.
The judges think that the Ndlovu Youth Choir deserve to be in the finals, after their exceptional performance of Whitney Houston’s song.
Higher Love is a 1986 song by English singer Steve Winwood, which was covered by Whitney Houston in 1990. Whitney’s cover was reworked by DJ Kygo and released as a single worldwide in August 2019. It peaked at #1 on Billboard magazine’s Dance Club Songs chart, making it Houston’s highest-charting posthumous release to date.
Judges Comments:
Gabrielle Union said, “You are the proud and joy of South Africa and the pride and joy of the world. What you guys do is so inspiring and so moving. I’m crying again. I’m just so incredibly proud. Way to go you guys.”
Julianne Hough said, “You are making waves. What you do is global inclusion and that is beyond anything that we could ever hope or dream for. Second of all, you’re bringing the love, I agree with Gabrielle. You just made us all dance like we can do what you do.”
Howie said, “One word – beautiful. You sound beautiful, you look beautiful. And looking at your faces, the audience’ faces, Simon’s face – this is the first time he’s worn glasses. You are the first act he has seen all season and what a way to open up.”
Simon said:
I thought the film was beautiful. The President of South Africa is actually tweeting about you. The pressure on the semifinal is enormous, and I really mean what I’m about to say. For me, this performance was in a way higher league than anything you’ve done prior to today… I love everything about it. And your joy, even when I see you guys backstage, the nicest group, the most excited group of people we’ve had on the show for years. You really deserve a place in the finals.
Sean Hayes said, “The first time seeing it live, the joy, the spirit, the talent, all of it is so infectious. Dare I say I don’t know how you’re not going to the finals. I just felt it was amazing, incredible.”
