Terry Crews’ Golden Buzzer act, the Detroit Youth Choir (DYC), reprised their audition piece ‘Can’t Hold Us’ at the finals of America’s Got Talent 2019 (Season 14).
‘Cant’ Hold Us’ is a song by American hip hop duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis with singer Ray Dalton, and was originally released in August 2011. It was a sleeper hit and reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2013.
Even if it’s the second time around that the Detroit Youth Club has performed ‘Can’t Hold Us’, it was still amazing to watch and got a standing ovation from everyone. A lot of attendees made noise for them, making it hard to hear Gabrielle Union, the first judge asked by Terry Crews to give a comment about the choir’s performance.
Gabrielle said that the Detroit Youth Club showed “what could happen when you recognize that you are excellent from birth and sometimes it just takes a little bit of extra love and attention.” She continued, “And if we give it to all our kids, all of us can shine and you guys shined so bright on that stage. Way to go!”
Julianne Hough said the performance was unbelievable and thanked Anthony White, the choir director, for giving “every single one of them a chance to shine and have moments. She said the choir all had specific moments then came together and “just took us to a whole new level.”
Simon Cowell said, “I don’t see a choir, I see a group of individuals who throughout this entire competition have done everything you possibly can with enthusiasm, friendship, talent, personality. You represent your city, you have meant so much to us. This is gonna be such a tough competition tonight and God Bless you Mr. White.”
Howie commented, “What you do is amazing. You know tonight, especially with like V. Unbeatable then followed by you, the youth and the passion and excitement – I feel like I’m attending the Simon Cowell day care center. I can imagine that’s what it’s like.”
