Guitarist Marcin Patrzalek (age 18) from Poland, displayed his epic guitar-playing skills performing ‘Misirlou’ & ‘Paganini’ at the quarterfinals of America’s Got Talent 2019 (Season 14).
‘Misirlou’ is a folk song from the Eastern Mediterranean region with origins in the Ottoman Empire, and gained worldwide popularity through Dick Dale’s 1962 American surf rock version, originally titled ‘Miserlou’.
Marcin Patrzalek cleverly mixed “Misirlou” with “Caprice No. 24” by Italian violinist and composer Niccolò Paganini, who likely composed it in the period between 1805 and 1809.
The performance of the young guitarist impressed the live audience at the Dolby Theatre and AGT judges Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, Julianne Hough and Gabrielle Union, and everyone gave him a standing ovation.
Gabrielle Union said, “Man, I’m blown away. This is what I imagine our parents and our grandparents felt when they first heard Carlos Santana, and Jimi Hendrix, and Clapton. What Marcin is doing is revolutionizing the guitar for a whole new generation. You are such a rockstar. I cannot wait to see you in concert, you are absolutely amazing.”
Julianne said she wanted to do Flamenco and Paso Doble as Marcin performed. She told Marcin, “That was so special, that was artistry at its finest. Wow!”
Simon Cowell said that technically, Marcin is one of the most talented people they’ve ever had on AGT, “ever”. ‘With the right song, with this ability, and your stage presence, you’re a contender.”
Howie Mandel said he had not seen anything like Marcin before, and described him as a one-man band.
Martin Patrzalek was the Judges’ Choice during the Dunkin’ Save and thus goes through the semifinals. Along with Marcin Patrzalek, the other acts that went through the semifinals are the Detroit Youth Choir, Emanne Beasha, Eric Chien, Dom Chambers, Benicio Bryant, and Jackie Fabulous.
