Benicio Bryant (age 14) from Washington performed an original song, “Who I Am”, at the quarterfinals of America’s Got Talent 2019 (Season 14).
AGT judges were in awe of the young musician’s talent, but had different opinions as to his performance and song choice.
Julianne Hough said that Benicio took a very big risk to sing an original song but said he did an unbelievable job. She said she is a fan of the song and will listen to it.
Simon Cowell said he loves Benicio Bryant because he has a natural talent. But he said the song should have been stripped down because the backings overwhelmed it, the lights were ridiculous.
“What I needed was just you. Your voice, maybe just one instrument. No production because you are someone, I guarantee you this, (who) has a great future ahead of you…You don’t need all that stuff going on behind you. It’s you, your talent, the voice, the lyrics, everything that really counts, and there’s more to come,” Simon told Benicio.
Howie Mandel said he didn’t respond to the song. But he said people should vote for Benicio Bryant for his talent. He said he does not know if the song is the right choice.
Gabrielle Union said Benicio Bryant is a rockstar and the whole audience knows it. “You have it,” she said.
