Kawhi Leonard (age 28) of the Toronto Raptors has been named the National Basketball Association (NBA) 2019 Finals MVP.
It’s the second time that Kawhi Leonard secured the Bill Russell Finals MVP Award. He got his first Finals MVP in 2014, when he won an NBA championship with the San Antonio Spurs.
Leonard powered the Raptors to their first championship on Thursday, June 13, 2019 with these stats in Game 6: 22 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists.
Kawhi Leonard had the following averages throughout the series:
- 28.5 points
- 9.8 rebounds
- 4.2 assists
- 2.0 blocks
- 1.2 steals
Leonard joins Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and LeBron James as the only players to earn Finals MVP from two different franchises.
Abdul-Jabbar won his Finals MVP in 1971 with the Milwaukee Bucks, and in 1985 with Los Angeles Lakers.
Meanwhile LeBron James got two consecutive Final MVP Awards in 2012 and 2013 when he was with the Miami Heat and picked another one in 2016 when he led the Cleveland Cavaliers to its first title in franchise history.
Kawhi Leonard is only the 4th player in NBA history to win a Finals MVP in his first season with a team, preceded only by Magic Johnson (Lakers), Moses Malone (Philadelphia 76ers) and Kevin Durant (Golden State Warriors).
